So what if it's not the greatest steel in the world, I mean it's only a sock knife. It is only a ceremonial part of your outfit right? Or do you want a REAL weapon? Simple questions that only you can answer.
How can you tell it's **** steel?

    I wouldn't classify a sgian dubh as a "weapon." It's a tool.

I don't know if I qualify for the august title of Knife Nerd, but I'd immediately take a knife to it, and dress up the basketweave a bit (actually, a lot); for $30 it looks like it's got real potential. Anyway, as others have alluded to, who cares what I think, as long as you're happy with it.

if you want to use it as a tool, be sure it holds an edge. If it doesn't, just use it for dress occasions and save to spring for one that you can use.

    That does look pretty good.
I'd put an edge on it. If it is carbon steel instead of stainless, well, you've got a decent head start (carbon steel is better for blades in my opinion, though treated and tempered stainless can make a fine knife).
I am still on the hunt for a sgian with good edge keeping. I've got my dresser, and I like it, like the handle style... but I don't like the idea of dress blades myself. I for one like the idea of functional, even if it is never needed.
    Just me though.

    Have fun with this piece!

Well It has came and I'm working on putting an edge on it as we speak. The blade is not stainless and being a PITA at sharping. I think its a pretty good deal for a ok knife.
