The rules of orthography are a fascinating jumble of contradictions.
Even Shakespeare spelt his name several different ways so what hope for the Brits let alone the Americans?

I before E, except after C and a million other exceptions.
E comes before I in most names, like Keith, so needless to say Tolkien kept screwing me up for the longest time.
