As we were passing through the Dardenelles on my cruise, the memorials on the shore were pointed out to us. It was definitely some rough terrain to attempt an assault, lots of steep slopes rising up from the sea.
I will remember the courageous souls that took part in the campaign.

Today is the anniversary of the Aussies courageous efforts at the debacle that was Gallipoli in Turkey, during WW1. After being landed at the wrong spot by the British, they found themselves outnumbered immensely & on the worst terrain imaginable for a fighting man, yet fought with valour, courage, & a spirit of mateship unmatched in its day. For full details, google either Gallipoli or Lone Pine. On this day, Australia became a nation rather than just a colony, & celebrates the fighting spirit of my adopted country. The following verse is said at services & RSL clubs (Returned Servicemen's League) all over Australia, along with a minute's silence.
They shall not grow old,
As we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning,
We will remember them.
Lest We Forget
Not just for Aussies, but we KIWIs also!!! My brother is over in the US with us for a few days sailing and the two of us recited the verse together as we sailed across Pamlico Sound to honor those courageous Diggers and Kiwis who stormed ashore at Gallipoli all those years ago.

Too true, & my apologies for leaving the kiwis out in my original post. It was in no way intended as a slight. I tend not to think too straight on ANZAC Day.
Hi to any former crew of DDG38, HMAS Perth, who I may have missed in person today.
Also, the guys from 6btn RAR, 2Cav, & a couple of guys from certain other regiments that they prefer not be named. Come home safe.

Gallipoli...
Besides the ANZACS (Australia New Zealand Army Corps), there were English, Irish, Scottish, French and Canadian forces at Gallipoli.

Here's to nations born from fire. The 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge just passed, and if the way you feel about Gallipoli is anything like the way we Canadians feel about Vimy, then it's really something to be proud of.

Greetings all, and though I come to this thread a day late, let me add my best wishes, honor and respect to those who served in that terrible place, and those who serve around the world now.
As a songwriter I'll add that the song "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" was written by Scottish-Australian songwriter Eric Bogle. Credit where credit is due. (He also has another brilliant WWI-related song called Green Fields of France (No Man's Land) which is well worth a listen.
Best to all,
db
