I dig where you're coming from. The closest thing that I've found to a "plain" looking kilt jacket is the Wallace Jacket at Scottishkilts.net. I understand the desire for all the "trimmings" that some guys have but I prefer a plainer style...sort of the contemporary look. That's what's needed is that Navy Blazer cut to kilt length...something that you can wear to work or to a less than fully formal function.
Unfortunately, all you can do is have a regular jacket cut down or get one custom made...makes me miss the traveling Hong Kong tailor that used to come to town once a year to take orders.

If you have a Brooks Brothers near you, they have custom tailors that take orders a couple of times a year for any given location.

Oh Lord! You must think that I'm rich!
Anyway, I once went into the local Brooks Brothers to buy a suit and all the trimmings and the clerk was so unbelievably condescending that I left and went across the street to Marshall Field's and bought TWO suits, a dozen shirts and two pair of shoes...needless to say, this was back when I was single and mortgage-less and child-less...you know: the Good Old Days?

Just say 'NO' to suit jackets with kilts. You might say they don't suit a kilt.
That doesn't mean you need to wear a jacket that looks like a refugee from the 18th century, either. From the Scottish Tartan Museum & modeled by our own Matt Newsome, here's a good example of the way a modern kilt jacket should look like.
Happiness? I'd settle for being less annoyed!!!

If you can shell out for a tank, you can shell out for a nice jacket, and with the same justifications.

Look for a Brooks Brothers Outlet store, but I must say, Brooks Brothers really isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of things, and...you get what you pay for.
I am a loyal BB customer, though, so I am a wee bit biased.

Kind of like a tails jacket without the tails? I picked up one from a tux shop and after dry cleaning my total cost was under $25. Looks good, but I rarely have occasion to wear it.
