We are basking in glorious sunshine in Scotland just now which makes a change. It is usually the other way round with England complaining about droughts and hosepipe bans. As Hamish says building more houses in flood-prone areas is sheer madness and you can only feel sorry for all the families left homeless. Thank God it is nothing like what happened in New Orleans.

We live on higher ground in Oxfordshire so we have had no flooding despite the heavy rain. The fact that some roads were been closed due to floods or log jammed with traffic because they were the only roads open has stopped us getting to the theatre (on Friday) and a National Trust estate (on Sunday). Tonight however we had a great time at an open air concert - Appalachian clog dancing in a village in the heart of the English countryside accompanied by an excellent local band, believe it or not. I was very tempted to get my kilt swinging to the toe tapping rhythms but had to be content to clap along. By some miracle it did not rain but a couple of miles away, the level of water in the Thames was continuing to rise ...

We had many roads closed due to flooding here in South Warwickshire last Friday (20th July). The river Avon in Stratford burst it's banks and flooded the waterside area of the town.

What we experienced though was nothing in comparison to the unfortunate folks of Tewkesbury and Upton upon Severn.
