Lets see...
Early 70's - tie dye, denim, "army" jackets, peace symbols, corduroy, earth shoes, and ponchos.
Later 70's - platform shoes, nehru jackets, leisure suits, wide brimmed hats, mood rings, and satin bomber jackets.
Don't forget the 70's not only brought us disco music - it also brought us the peace movement, earth day, punk music and skin heads.
If there's anything in there... you are welcome to it!

Yes, velvet!
Think George Lazenby in 'On her Majesty's Secret Service'. I believe this was the only time wore a kilt. Okay that was in 1969 so fudge it a bit.

I'm thinking wear your usual kilt, hose and and sporran, and get a 1970's ruffle-front tuxedo shirt and a velvet bow tie...AND perhaps a big shaggy wig or maybe a realistic looking afro wig! Cool!
The ruffle-tux shirt and velvet bow tie are "must haves"!
I'm sure glad I'm not old enough to remember the 70's...the photos are bad enough!
Good luck!

Can you get your hands on a peace symbol large enough for a kilt belt? Then I would look for a tie died shirt with colors that clash with the kilt. Remember not following the norm and not staying with establish guidelines were the rules.
Go for wild.
Now for much of the 70's I seemed to be wearing funny green and in large groups of men wearing exactly the same thing. Artillery - the King of Battle!

Hmmm... time to dig out some re-runs of "Rowen and Martin's Laugh-in" I'm sure you can put together a kilt outfit that work -- after all, the kilt fits into almost any era.

Kilts have'nt changed in Centuries, your kilt with a white Gillie shirt would do. Good luck Derek

Perhaps this look would work for you.

Just the tis dye part, not the Coyote Run logo.
"A day spent in the fields and woods, or on the water should not count as a day off our allotted number upon this earth."
Jerry, Kilted Old Fart.
