Well I'm glad you figured out that you don't have to be Scottish to wear a kilt!
Here's a little local colour that you might not have heard of yet:

Mike,
First off a hearty welcome to you.
Glad you have found the board and I hope you enjoy your time here.
As for the festival that Edward mentioned.
Toddish is a member here from way back. He hasn't popped in for a while
but I think this would be a wonderful event to check out.

Toddish aka Todd Wong. He is a regular at the kilts night and he is definitely a local celeb. He had been interviewed by CBC television, CBC radio, BBC Scotland and a German TV station. CBC Newsworld also did a special on his family which featured him in his fraser kilt.
He is a great friend as well. As side attending the monthly kilts night at Doolin's Irish Pub(Corner of Nelson and Granville) the first Thursday of every month, he is also an experience Dragon Boater. He coached our corporate team with great success and he led his team to a gold medal at the recent Dragon Boat meet at Vernon. I just did the Grouse Grind with him this morning. I am sore.

Thanks guys!
I had actually heard about Toddish, from the Wizard!
I'd like to come out to some of these events, it's always fun meeting new people.
Just got back in from wearing a black UK workmans to a nightclub (that has a strict dress code, luckily, a friend of mine knows some of the people there, and they let me in), and aside from some people giving me some looks, nothing was said.
Definitely loving wearing out these kilts/mugs
Mike

Well done, Mike. Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of kilts. If you get out to the valley at all, drop me a line and we can "pub it up".

Mike:
Way to go, and welcome aboard from Space City (Houston, TX).
As far as "being able to pull it off" goes, especially when tied to ethnicity/nationality/DNA-heritage, I got a pretty easy pass, since I'm your basic East Texas Celtic mutt (Scots, Irish, Welsh and probably an Englishmen in the woodpile somewhere). It's my firm belief, though, that you don't have to be Scots, or even Celtic, or even gringo, to appreciate the kilt, and to carry it off with style and grace.
Oddly enough, I wore hakama to high school for about two weeks, before I finally capitulated and went back to "real p*nts."
I respect good ideas no matter where they come from, whether in terms of food (yay!) or dress, or indeed in terms of politics or literature. I've had several black guys express interest in the kilt, and that's here on the South Coast. In terms of comfort, in terms of style, in terms of durability, it's just hard to beat a kilt. (And if we weren't strictly a kilt board, I'd allow that the same is doubtless true of other MUGs as well!)
Once more, welcome aboard, and well done.
