Did they by chance give you any explanation to help understand their reasoning?

Here is the response I received. Not wanting to publicize where I work I have the name and replaced with (the company).
"I have reviewed your request with corporate. Whereas the Company understands your preference based on your linage and your desire to exhibit so, (the company) has denied such request. Because you have so much interaction with customers/visitors, (the company) feels that this could make them feel uncomfortable, damaging (its) relationship with them. In an effort to continue with the great job that you have already been doing with (the company), we really feel at this time that we would like to continue with the current dress code at (the company). However, if you would like to wear a kilt to Company functions, such as picnics, Christmas parties, etc…we welcome you to do so. Feel free to stop up if you have any further questions regarding this issue."

I'm sorry you were turned down but I can understand their position. We may not like it but, people can be so sensitive. I can just imagine a customer getting weirded out by a kilt and then having issues with the company.

I have been denied already also where I work. I spoke with the VP of Operations and the HR director and they both said "Uh, No it's not business appropriate" to which i responded "Actually it is, can I at least wear it on St. Patrick's Day?" and they said "No, you can wear it on Halloween, that's it"
So I plan to wear my kilt to work this Halloween, and dress very professional in it to show them that I can look very professional in a kilt.
We'll see.

I was offered the same concession at my previous place of employ, but I didn't take them up on it. Doing so would have, in my opinion, propagated the notion that kilts are costumes rather than clothing meant for everyday wear.
I understand your intention, but considering the context the message may not be heard as you intend. If that's the case then you haven't lost anything because they've already said no.
Then again, maybe they'll take notice and change their minds...
Good luck!

If you could find enough people at work who are proud of there heritage and have been denied the right/privelage of wearing their own ethnic or national garb, do you think a class action suit would have any chance of succeeding? Is this something that anyone would want to resort to?

Not to seem insensitive, but you might sue the pants off of them.
