Wow.
I remember once being "kilt lifted" by a someone with crutches at the LA County Irish Festival. I wouldn't have minded that much, but I was with my mom.

Well, it not like she'd never seen it before

Well, I AM 17, and since the last time I was in my birthday suit in front of my mother I have, in fact, gone through many physical changes; this is a transition commonly referred to in the medical and scientific professions as "puberty," or sometimes as "adolescence."

The only time (so far) I've ever had anyone even joke about lifting my kilt, it was the only other man in a room full of women.

Well they did say it was a full moon party so I suppose they expected you to moon.

I always go regimental! It's part of wearing the kilt.....comfort!
My kilt has been lifted more times than I can count. If that is going to embarrass you, don't wear the kilt!
When my kilt is lifted they see.......:butt:

My thoughts too.
I've only had one attempt at a lift. And that was by a guy that I used to work with. Didn't know who behind me was lifting it but when I felt it move the left hand came swinging down behind my back, swiftly. When I turned around he was rubbing his wrist with a "what the.....?" look on his face.

If these were people you knew well and you wore a kilt the majority of the time I think you would have received a different reaction. As they didn't know you they assumed it was a costume.
It's definitely their problem, but most just don't see a kilt as straight forward clothing yet. When your dressed in a kilt (especially a formal traditional) it will be assumed that you are dressed up for a reason (i.e. pipe band etc.) not that you chose to wear the kilt because you like it. Ask the members here how often they have been asked if they had been in a parade just because they were in a kilt.
You will still run into jerks, even if your not at a costume party, but most of the response will be positive. In the 40 years I have worn a kilt I can only remember a handful of insults and getting "checked" twice. Once it led to something so i can't complain about that.
Heck, I've worn a kilt to a self described redneck bar and when the lights went up half the patrons made their way to our table. My friends thought they were going to string me up, but I spent an hour hearing about folks, parents and grandparents and how cool they thought wearing a kilt was. So wear your kilt, enjoy it, ignore the idiots, soak up the glances from the ladies but until the kilt is really part of your identity make sure you don't set yourself up.
