Ian, you beat me to it.

In cool I wear a heavy plaid flannel shirt
with my tartan kilts. It doesn't take too
much effort to avoid a major clash. The
minor clash that does occur really is minor.

There is a whole different side to this, at least in my case. I am of a pail skin type and so on that makes any bright color stand out horribley when I wear it. I just have to be very careful about what colors I'm wearing which happens to exclude all the bright oranges and red of tartan. I can't mix real brown and real black, not charcoal, at all and that excludes all these day wear/ evening wear rules for me.

So I guess my tradition of tie dye with kilts is not so odd?

    Lightbulb

Wouldn't bother me a bit. You know, I kind of like the look of the large casual kilt pleats as long as the kilt isn't made of "girly material". It kind of reminds me of a gladiator look, or shepard look... But only for casual dressing. Has anyone tried tie dyeing a canvas kilt?

    Wink

But it it's worse, now we're talking about tie dyeing a BK, ha ha ha. Which leads to the question what kind of shirt does one wear with a tie dye kilt.
    BTW
I want a box pleat kilt too.

I am looking into other ways of using tartan like paterns with a solid color kilt. I even like the idea of aloaha shirts. Guess I can report here in this thread in the future.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I think it's a great idea! Of course, I wear laid shirts with tartan kilts. I've also been know to wear a yellow aloha shirt with a Royal Stewart tie and a Clergy Tartan kilt.

    So, don't take my advice.

Yes, I have a question. Did they wear different tartans (up to 3?) together on purpose? Were they trying to confuse or blind their oponents in battle?

(My post is in jest, in case you didn't catch my humor)

    Hellya!

Until we can find a Hawaiian shirt cut like a Scottish jacket seems best to wear them open with a t-shirt under...know that may be asking a lot on the desert though.
