"Fixing" a cheap cantle

This is the first that I have heard that chrome is hard to paint. It looks like you solved the problem, and the difference is striking.

That is quite an improvement over the original, the black paint greatly improves the appearance. I have one of those "cost effective" dress sporrans. The appearance of the cantle has always bothered me. I'll have to study the construction of mine and see how the cantle comes off of the sporran.

You did take the cantle off didn't you?

Yep. It comes off easily with three threaded studs and nuts. Careful reattaching it 'cause the threads strip easily on the low-quality metal. Mine was originally mounted wrong, so I had to punch three new holes about 3/8" to one side of the originals. Now things look a lot more symmetrical.

I got a similar effect on the clan badge I wear on my Balmoral bonnet by painting it with India ink, but the surface metal of that badge is probably pewter or maybe cadmium plate---it's definitely not chromium. The effect resembles silver which has tarnished and been polished on the high areas only. "Brings out the flavor."
