Wow, that's quite the story. It's good to hear that you're ok.
I've only been to Tijuana a few times, but I always felt really safe. Of course, I was just walking around the mostly touristy area I suppose. The only exciting thing I saw was a kid doing some fire blowing tricks at a stop sign. If I ever make it back there, I'll be a bit more cautious.

Excellent that the thief went away empty handed.

Great to know he made off with nothing more than the belt. I use the sporran belt with two clips on it. But, my sporrans also have the little double d-ringed leather deal that runs through where a solid belt would go. So, were someone to cut my sporran belt they wouldn't get much more than the strap. My concern would be the little piece of crap would nick some worsted wool in his haste.

Well just goes to show that you are much safer against picksporrans than you are against pickpockets!

Glad to hear you and your valuables are safe. I've often wondered how safe sporrans were in that kind of situation.
I'm also intrigued by the idea of stuffing your kilt with a sock. Very clever and not intuitive (to me).

That's why I always wear boots when I go out. Just in case some punk like that needs to have his ribs reminded not to steal.
I'm glad all he got was your strap. It was very prudent of you to think ahead and be prepared for just such an occurrence.

Jay, I am so glad you got away lightly from this experience, and what you say about the sporran strap is SO RIGHT! D-Rings, clips and chains are for Dress Sporrans, NOT all leather Day Sporrans. Traditionally, and when I was a lad it was the norm, Day Sporrans should be worn on a single length leather sporran strap looped through the back of the sporran.
Allowing a severed strap to be pulled from the sporran, as yours was, is just another of many very good reasons for every kilt wearer to insist on wearing the D-Ringless, clipless and chainless leather strap with his Day Sporrans!
Take heed, fellow kilt wearers.
Take care,
Ham.
