Hello and a warm from Boston, Massachusetts
True Scottish name???? If you know the surname that you wish to follow up on, you can try on many genealogy websites. Ancestry.com is like the Home Depot of genealogy in the U.S. In Scotland it's Scotlands Family Tree Ancestry is has many databases, some of which are not perfect. Scotlands Family Tree is a forum based web site, with many moderators and members doing the research.
As far as tartans go the previous posts have covered the best.
Enjoy ye Rabble.

It would be wise to take the lists of clan septs with a grain of salt. Many are questionable. Some are totally bogus.
The only ways to be sure of your ancestry is the slow but solid process of going backward in time generation by generation, following the paper trail. There is also genetic genealogy. See the FAQ at www.ftdna.com for more information.

Welcome to Xmarks from Amelia county Virginia. If you want members to help you find your clan association and tartan, you are going to have to post your name. However, as the forum says, "You don't have to be Scottish to wear a kilt". There are many generic tartans, and very few if any clans would object to someone who wears their tartan with respect.
"A day spent in the fields and woods, or on the water should not count as a day off our allotted number upon this earth."
