Darkislander - that's my "I did set the timer, didn't I?" expression. It shows up in most of my pictures.
James - now I'm working on handsewn #4: 10 oz. Maple Leaf PV, with 7 oz. hemp/cotton lining. Another winter kilt. And I'm making it completely left-handed (not switching back and forth like I've done with the previous three).
McMurdo - if I get the current one finished before Grimsby, you'll see it. Otherwise I'll be wearing the Hunting Stewart.
McClef - I won't tell Frankenchuck what you said. For a dead stuffed rodent, he's very sensitive you know.
Everyone else - thanks for the kind remarks. Of course, the positive feedback just encourages me to sew more kilts ...

Once you're hooked, take training, and sew a few kilts, there is nothing to compare with making your own. Great job on the tapers. And yes, practice leads to... more practice! (Maybe, someday, we'll be good at it, like Barb and Elsie.)
As far as full mask sporrans being too large - I'm of the opinion that if the sporran holds all the "necessaries" I stuff into it AND it initiates the kind of comments it does, especially from young children, then so what if it looks disproportionate? Maybe it's my North American mountain man/trapper cultural heritage - tempered somewhat. Besides, my full mask squirrel sporran looks like it is crawling around in my lap rather than serving its main useful purpose.

The Victorians went in for disproportionate sporrans but I am not sure that they actually kept anything in them.
Such sporrans today are largely limited to military/piping occasions rather than everyday wear and again I don't think they have much storage usage.
The full mask ones clearly have the advantages of storage but then so do more ordinary sporrans and whilst providing a better balance with the apron. An animal head on a full mask is also distorted due to lack of rigidity within and cannot reproduce the way it looked originally.
So it ultimately boils down to aesthetics and taste and not everybody is going to agree on these points.

The "Deer in the headlights" look! Wompet always looks like that.

Pity that stuffed dead animal is obscuring so much of the apron though!
I agree Trefor, like you, I'd prefer to see Gary with his full-face chipmunk sporran just to show off his wonderful sewing skills.
Gary I do like the pleating to the alternate red/yellow stripe.

No different than the skin (leather) of dead animals obscuring the apron of YOUR kilts you know.
I've noticed you always chime in with some sort of negative remark when it someone posts pictures of or with a full mask sporran.
I'm of the opinion that when it comes to animal protection feelings it's: all or none. It's like a "vegetarian" who eats eggs and fish but throws red paint on the lady in the mink coat. It just doesn't make any sense.

That is a unique way to pleat to the stripe.

Yes, the Canadian Scottish Regiment and the Royal Scots (I think) pleat it that way, alternating red and yellow stripes. It does look nice.

I am no vegetarian Bradley and I am, I hope, entitled to my own opinion. I do not have the stuffed heads of cows or sheep or seals on my sporrans and in the case of the first two, they are the by product in any case of an edible animal. The popularity of full mask sporrans appears to be mainly North American, many kilties over here would not touch them. In which case it's a cultural difference and these do exist - the issue of animal protection is not even the issue (especially in the case of road kill), it's a matter of aesthetics. I happen to like looking at taxerdermic specimens when they show the animal in a natural setting, but what might look good in a glass case does not necessarily look good in a more mangled state in front of a kilt apron. It is not my intention to stop people wearing what they like but I don't have to agree that it looks good. Do not mistake negative for constructive. Such sporrans often take considerably more space than an ordinary sporran and can affect the balance of the finished appearance.
It would be rare indeed to see a mink's head attached to a mink coat by the way regarding your analogy. Whether or not there are vanity or issues of wealth involved you can argue that the coat is wam.

I didn't mean to offend his feelings Wompet - I am sure he would be happy for a rival, but smaller sporran to show off the apron better so your workmanship could be better seen and appreciated.
