I was thinking much the same myself. Wouldn't everyone want to be Mr Black? lol

Oh ok, I looked up Ben Dubh. No problem with that tartan and not being in a clan. I would put that in the same gist as the Gray Granite tartan. Those are safe to wear.

Ummm, Logan...the reason I put "family tartan" in quotes is because I understand one color isn't a tartan...
Don't know the word...but the question, idea, concept, was do people named White identify with the color white in their garments...or could they...or should they?
I know there is a Brown tartan that isn't all brown....but would/could a Brown wear a solid brown kilt with pride too...?

The funny thing, Ron, is that the people who would most likely be able to answer your question, M O R comes to mind, are not responding to this thread... Strange...
I would like to hear their answers too.

FYI there was an eariler thread about alleged Irish clan kilts of solid colors. There is some recent evidence for it, but then there are authoritative sources that say it's hogwash.
At any rate, the colors assigned to the purported clan kilts had nothing to do with the clan surnames, as I recall.

Ah, sounds like a motercycle clan, BoldHighlander...
And glad to hear that it is in fact safe to wear a solid color kilt if not in a clan of that solid color name...
Sorry I keep pestering your threads, Ron.

First off Irish clan tartans are an invention of the 20th centery. And since solid colour "tartans" are not tartans, but just that solid colours, I'm sure that's the reason M O R is not responding..

Hello...never intended for this to be "official" or "historic." I know that a guy named Black wouldn't necessarily wear all black clothing...
Just seemed it might be an idea to wear a solid color modern contemporary kilt (Freedom Kilt, RKilt, Utilikilt, USA Kilt) in a color that matched their last name.
And, just my demented, besotted, impish brain thinking...if I were a Mr. Black I just might call my solid colored black kilt the Clan Black "tartan."
Please close the dictionaries and history books a moment and frolic, giggle, laugh, play....

Mr. Brown wearing the Clan Brown "tartan" kilt....

Mr. White wearing the Clan White "tartan" kilt....

M O R?
Yes, I am well away that solid colors are not tartans, other than shadow tartans.
