Wow that is nice I am presently checking the local lumber yards for a good 6x6 to make into one as per Alan instructions, not a lot of luck recently. Wish I had trees like that around here, cacti do not make good cabers.

When I thought about hunting cabers, I imagined it wouldn't be too hard. After all, they flock out in the open in such nice straight rows for all to see. I imagine the hardest part would be untangling them from all the wires at the top.

Warwick be careful when hunting Cabers in Maryland. Last year three people were injured by the wild Snipes they kicked up in Carroll and Washington Counties.

I would have liked to try to do the caber toss, even because when I was young I was already big and strong and I worked as a woodman to pay my studies and this was not a sport, but a part of the job anbd I did't know the Highland Games!
Now I would have liked to see what could I do, but my knees and a big problem on the bones of my hips don't allow me to do this efforts anymore.

So, being unable to partecipate to the Games I'll be your first supporter Warwick!
Let's start with the practice: do some stretching, let your muscles warm with some increasing exercises to avoid damages, and after.. let's go tossing the caber!

Thanks for the follow up pictures.

Would you be interested in posting some pictures of those weights? They look really good for a home made effort.

I forgot to write how I shaped the caber...

I used a hand saw to cut the caber to the final length

I used a machete as a draw knife to debark the tapered end

I also used the hand saw to cut the end into an octagon

I used a small hand rasp to finish debarking and finish shaping the end

the caber is 18.5 ft and about 7 stone

Yaish i will take some pictures of my practice equipment and post a new thread, hopefully this weekend

Thanks Warwick! It looks like some really impressive work you've done. All that shaping by hand too.

    Alan is cheating!!!
