The boy scouts also have two really good pamphlets on leather work and braiding.

Yep, good ol' Tandy. I second, or is it third now, the Al Stohlman recommendation. I have the Art of Hand Stitching, as well as the 3 volume series on making leather cases. Jump in and play around is great advice, have fun!
Jump in and go for it. My first sporran came from the remnant bin and it turned out OK. There are little tricks and techniques that are unique to each person that develop with experience only. If you ever need advice dont hesitate to ask, even questions that may seem stupid or small. Its the details that really matter.

I totally agree. Start with scrap leather, practice. You will develope your own style. Please yourself, if you like it, it will be fine. I have been tooling leather since the early seventys and I still throw away mistakes (a lot more than I like) (I won't sell anything I wouldn't wear myself). Do ask questions, the only dumb questions are the ones you don't ask. Most of all, enjoy yourself!!!
