Welcome to the forum from south central Virginia. You will find, that the majority of the cost for a kilt is in the cloth used. It can run as high as $60 to $70 per meter, and you will need about two meters for even a 4 yard casual kilt. QAlthough I haven't purchased one yet, I'd recommend ordering a copy of Barb Tewksbury's book, "The Art of Kiltmaking". It will have everything you need to decide how much cloth you will require for your kilt as well as all instructions you will need to make it One thing you will learn is that the amount of cloth needed is based on your girth and the sett of the particular tartan you are using as well as how you pleat the cloth (to sett or to stripe).

MacRae cousin, from coastal North Carolina. Try USA kilts for a semi traditional, Rocky should be able to get you a MacRae tartan for a reasonable price from Marton Mills.

I also second suggesting getting a copy of Barbs book. You can order it from here or from the Scottish Tartans Museum here
"A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." anon

Cathal, with the exchange rate such that it is, you will be highly unlikely to find a "made in Scotland" 8yd wool kilt for under $600!! Trust me!

Oh, and welcome from Arlington, Texas!
