Matt Newsome has a website called http://www.district-tartans.com/ that lists a huge amount of tartans associated with a place rather than a clan (including U.S. State and even city tartans).

    re

    I second that!!

I need an official list so I can go buy all of them. I feel like I need some variety and my favorites change all the time.

    re

Just checked that link you gave. I really love the one on the very bottom of this page called wild geese (scroll way down)

Of course probably hard to get in something I could afford

When we recently redid our website, I made a list of MOST of the stock universal tartans from the 5 major mills in the UK...

    http://www.usakilts.com/store/tartan...=show&gazgal=1

I put as many on here as I saw while uploading the files. I may have missed a few, but this is a pretty good sized list.

Curiosity, but do you have any of the state tartans? (I saw a New York on there, but didn't notice any others)

What he has posted are the "STOCK" tartans each mill keeps on hand. Most state tartans are special weaves.

So then pay out the wazoo twice for those, right? (I think spending 500 on a single bit of clothes as paying out the wazoo. That's more than my first and second wedding rings cost, combined. (lost 35#, had to get a smaller one. Granted, the new one was only 65 bucks or so, but still..)

I really liked Rocky's list of universal tartans (and the newly revised webpage too), especially the way you can see how the colours of the same tartan differ from mill to mill.

Even though I have ancestral roots in Argyll, I opted for the Scotland National from Marton Mills. It's just a great looking sett. It has colour without being bright. It has no association with the military or specific clans but if only by virtue of its name it is associated with Scotland. Yet, at the same time, there is enough green in the sett to remind me of my Irish roots as well.

Maybe someday I'll be ready for a red kilt...MacQueen.

Who makes an Isle of Skye kilt in PV? Or is only available in wool?

    Just curious.
