The only real rule I go by is to not wear my sporran too low so that is swings and bangs when I walk. I usually try to position it as the others have stated; 3-4 finger widths below my belt.

Sometimes I use hangers which put it about 3 fingers below the bottom of the belt. Sometimes I use a strap which I adjust to where it is comfortable. Sometimes higher, sometimes lower. It depends on my mood really. When on my Vespa I use a belt adapter from Calvescout & my sporran sits right on my belt.

3 fingers, 4 fingers...2 fingers....what if the fingers are skinny or fat?

3 fat fingers would be what...4 skinny fingers?

I'd say common sense, and as somene said above, low and high enough to avoid slapping the lads.

on a side note, I really like how in most photos of The Duke of Rothesay, he's wearing 2 tones of leather, black and brown, whether brown shoes/black belt/sporran, or viceversa.

I can see this being a good dilemma if you were ordering scotch by the finger. Like in the show Rescue Me when Denis Leary orders 4 fingers of whiskey at the local bar. I'd rather have big fingers for that equation.

thanks guys It's good advice. Three fingers sounds about right to me. As one whose new to kilt life I'm thrilled to find a bunch of others. It took me years to buy one and now I'm really pleased I did. Being English with a huge love for Scotland but no knowledge of the history I realised my maternal grandfather was Scottish being a Brown. That was enough for me.
