Try a pair of the lycra warm up shorts or bicycle type shorts (without the chamois pad of course). They are generally nearly knee length and stay tight to the skin so will not let the cold blows reach the nether regions. Then you will only have about 6 inches of expeosed knees between your hosetops and the bottom of your shorts. Betweenyour shorts and your military weight kilt you should be fine, as your knees can tolerate being a bit chilled for a long time (much better than say ears, face, hands or feet).

He'll be wearing military weight kilts right? With a pair of thick wool hose (or two) He'll surely be quite comfortable. Generally we have no meat on our knees and will handle the cold quite well. By all means wear something warm covering the groin (for those occasional chilly gusts) and protect the head. By our design, in the cold, blood will be shunted away the extremities with the major heat loss being from our head, torso and groin. Protecting those areas are the key to being warm. Being from England I've never gotten used to these bloody freezing Canadian winters (heading into my 33rd). Living on Lake Ontario it can easily get to well below -25C with the wind chill factor (cold with humidity slices right through you). I cannot remember a time feeling comfortable in those temperatures and not being kilted (bare knees and all). I guess what I'm saying is tell your friend to take along long john, heck even the red wool ones with the escape hatch in the back! Take them along for piece of mind but to not wear them unless absolutly needed. BTW silk long john are purportedly the best, perhaps can even be kept in the sporran. Now I've heard of rumours of green tights/kilt worn in the southern hemishere...

Somewhere back there I seem to remember that they made a sort of short sleeved, short legged "onesies" for men with a three button henley type collar. The legs were a bit longer than the average boxer briefs legs.

I remember those well, but haven't seen any in about 60 years. They also had a "trap-door" in the back.

I remember them being made in a variety of materials, and weights, for summer, nainsook (a ribbed open weave fabric) in cotton, wool for colder, and "duo-therm" which I think was a trademark, where there was a layer of cotton next to the skin and wool on top for warmth. These, if I remember correctly, were a flat knit.

No...I saw them in the menswear section of a major department store a couple of years ago...they were bringing them back as a sort of sexy, metrosexual kind of thing.

...it may have been in Montreal...that would explain it.

I have to say, living in Colorado, going to the mountains regularly all year round, I haven't had any problems. My heaviest kilt is a 13 oz, and I have a pair of nice thick Locharran hose that come up almost to my knees after I turn them over onto the flashes. I just snug my kilt down an inch so that it hangs just below my knees. I know, that's not the modern convention. But you know what? It keeps me warm. Oh, and a nice felted wool hat like McMurdo's is great! I have once of these http://jas-townsend.com/product_info...roducts_id=250 It's wonderful.
