It sounds like he has some of the same concerns some of my family and friends have expressed. They do worry that someone is going to start trouble because I'm wearing a kilt. It's not just about being embarrassed by the guy in a skirt.

Of course I tell them about one night I walked into a bar and there was a crew of construction workers in there. I walked right through all of them to the bar and ordered, just saying "hi" politely as I went through. Later one of them was talking with me and said when I walked through the door they thought "That's a guy you don't want to mess with".
I thought that was funny because I'm by nature a shy person, not physically imposing and don't try to stand out or be the "alpha male".
Behold the power of the kilt.

One of the most frequent comments I've gotten from guys is that I must be able to handle myself pretty well if I'm willing to take the risk of going out kilted. Some have even said they thought I was spoilin' for a fight. In my case, neither is true, but I'm not going to poke any holes in it if folks are willing to assume that.

I'm all for the hubby wearing a kilt if he so chooses. And it doesn't surprise me a bit that his best friend is acting this way. The friend swears he's not a homophobe and loved watching Six Feet Under, but if it's in real life and is anywhere near him, he's a homophobe. I won't get into talking about closets and such here

The hubby ^ just can't decide which manufacturer he's gonna order from first and which tartan and all. Depending on finances and all, his first kilt might be a Yule gift.

I guess I am lucky my fiance is supportive and my best friend is a member of this forum. My brother and sister think it is cool and my folks decided long ago to support us in whatever decisions we make so I think my situation is hard to beat. Runewolf if your wife is backing you on everyone else will fall into line over time. Her support will over ride almost any objections that anyone else can make. all you have to do is say my wife likes it and that will shut them up in a heart beat. I get more compliments on my kilt when my Fiance and I are out together with me in the kilt than when I am out alone. A pretty girl on your arm will shut up a lot of nay-sayers

I live in a small town of 1700 and lots of people know I wear a kilt. I also go to the only bar in town and sing and Play harps on Friday night (Karaoke) Kilted. The first night I showed up, two years ago I got S*** , now when I show up without the kilt I get a ration. Go figure?
Get the Kilt you want and wear it. Just remember most of the come backs and don't stay after Midnight.

It's amazing even what reaction one can apparently get when women get wind that you've even ordered a kilt; I'll cite my own experience(s) as examples: Simply put, I don't own a kilt yet, but have a Law Enforcement tartan kilt on order, in addition to possibly getting an Isle of Skye tartan one locally, and I'm eyeing a Dress Gordon one locally as well. Anyways, when female friends of mine heard that this is happening, the compliments and constant questions of , "Oh, you'll look great...", "Has it arrived yet?" or "When can I see you in it?" have already begun in earnest.

Ah, the future looks good. Kilted, of course.

Many people really, strongly, dislike surprises. They want an environment in which everything is predictable. When you first showed up in a kilt you surprised them, and now when you're not kilted you surprise them. To please them you have to be perfectly predictable.

Surprises make them think, and that makes them feel insecure.

    Hi,

An observation from the Northern Panhandle: a huge percentage of the population of West Virginia is Scots, Scots Irish, Irish and Welsh. It has been my experience that not only will you not get any grief, but rather many people will approach you to talk of their Celtic heritage, enquire as to your tartan, and offer to buy you a round. As for the ladies, well, you will be the center of their attention.

I frequently wear my kilt in small towns and have never had any problem; wear your's with pride.
In theory there is no difference between theory and practice but in practice there is.
