I use the hanger or sling from Craigie Originals (http://sporrans.com) and am very pleased with it. I have the one made with a short chain.

I have two sporran belts I use. The most frequently used one is a leather strap about 1/2" (13mm) wide. It was a bit stiff, so I liberally coated it with Lexol (R) and that softened it up right a way. The other is made from a pair of dog "choker" chains. These are smooth, welded links and will not catch on the kilt. I use clips to fasten them to the sporran, and a split (key) ring in the back to fasten the two chains together. I cut the chains to the proper length, and since I am the only one wearing them, the non-adjustability is no problem.

On the other hand, I don't have much of a "front", as my waist is still several inches smaller than my hips. I understand that the sporran hangers are better for those gentlemen with "prosperous" builds.

I use their braided leather slings. I purchase the sling, kilt belt, sporran, and sporran belt together. They make everything from the same leather which gives a nice complete look.

My own opinion is that sporran hangers look awful. I'm with the guys who who use a leather strap for casual wear. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, buy a thin ladies' belt from Target or Walmart.

I have materials set aside to make some hangers, but I like look of the narrow belt that came with my L&M leather sporran several years ago; unfortunately Scooby appropriated the strap along with the sporran. I am currently reduce to a 1" nylon web belt; I don't know how that will look with the badger.

For me, sporran hangers are not one size fits all. I have several pairs, including black, brown, and red latigo. I use Chicago screws to hold all together, they allow me to switch things around if need be with no fear of coming unsnapped. I use different types of ends (or dispense with them altogether) to accommodate different sporrans.

They only fit one size, but you can see they are stitched, no snaps!

I have sporran hangers from Donnie at Wyvern Leatherworks

Scroll to the bottom of that page.
They snap as well, but they are not as thick as you described and have always worked well for me.
Pretty nice for only a $10.00 investment.
He also makes the leather sporran belt.
I haven't used one of his belts yet, but have one on order.

I don't have any of Oconee Leather Works yet, but know plenty of people that do that really like his as well.
One of his kilt belts is on my must have list.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I will definitely try using a leather sporran strap. I also like the look of those hangers from SWK and Wyvern. I think I could wear either strap or hangers OK since I am only "semi-prosperous" LOL.
