Of course...but military bonnets would not have a sprig of a plant badge, but rather a regimental hackle.

The regulation patches are 750 high and 650 wide and finished rather than folded over

What does that mean..."finished?" How is that done...I mean I can cut a swatch 750x650 but how do I "finish" the edges?

    Thinking more about this....

So what do you do if you are wearing the TOS more or less as a civilian bonnet (as many do) and have no regiment?

I served in an American unit that didn't have a regimental hackle, or at least I was never aware of one. I'd like to wear my wings and unit "badge" on my TOS not only to show my respect but because I'm proud to have served (and because I'm an old cob and that's what old cobs do). I don't think it violates any rules of etiquette or decorum but...no regimental hackle.

Wouldn't a sprig be appropriate under the circumstances?

No need to wear a hackle Royal Scots didn't neither did Argyles

Anyone have a simple pattern or set of instructions or dimensions? I saw one on a WWII re-enactor's TOS but didn't take the time to examine it closely. I think it was square.

Mods, I was conflicted about where to put this...if it needs to move to DIY, so be it...thanks.

    Thanks for that pointer...

I just received a very nice kilt in a custom variation of my clan tartan. Along with the kilt came some fairly large remnants...so I thought I would "build" my own.

I do wonder how the edges are "finished" though. If you've seen one of the ones from WPG and can advise me on this conundrum, I would appreciate it.

I'm still thinking about leaving one side open so that I can slip a sprig of boxwood behind the patch (in my earlier post I said dogwood but that was a "slip of the tongue").

Can't help you with WPG, but I would use a sewing machine that can bind the edges (whip stitching). That would give a neat appearance, sort of coloured frame around the piece of tartan. Just a suggestion. BTW don't you just love having all those scraps of tartan lying around?

I have seen people with sprigs tucked in there, I like the look . On St. Andrews day I have tucked Heather in.
