There are only three times I would wear my kilt on an interview. In reverse order they are:

    1. If I didn't want the job in which case I would be dressed casually.

    2. If the person I was interviewing with knew I was in the habit of wearing a kilt at times and specifically requested that I did.

    3. If the company was known to have several kilted personel and/or encouraged wearing the kilt. By that I mean, at least a third of the people wore kilts to work on a daily basis.

Any other time I woujld go on an interview I would be dressed one step above the normal for that company. Are jeans normal wear there? Then it would be slacks and polo shirt. Slacks and polo? I'd change to a button down shirt and tie. Just enough of a change to stand out as being sharp and presenting a good image.

    Just my $0.02.

I agree with every thing that has said. I would keep with conventional attire. Times are tough and getting a good job is important. The interviewers may use your appearence as that one little thing to choose one person over another.

I Own my Co. and I meet clients wearing a kilt and they still call me back and if I am not wearing a kilt I get "Where is your Kilt?".
I am not to sure if I would wear a kilt to a JOB Interview. Have not been to one in over 30 Years.
If I did have to interview I would have to agree with Livingston.

As a fellow job hunter I think you have to dress appropriately for the interview and the company in question, do your research! On the other hand, I attended a job fair last Thursday and made a conscious decision to go kilted (c/w shirt, tie, jacket & waistcoat/vest) to stand out amongst a sea of grey suits.

    Great advice!

As someone who used to work in the staffing industry I would coach our employees who had to interview for a position "dress as if you had the job".

You want the potential employer to see you not just as an individual, but as part of the existing team.

    Cheers

Visions of a woman back in the late fifties trying to decide whether to wear a pantsuit to a job interview or not.

What will the company think of someone brave enough? Will they be perceived as a troublemaker?

Will the company want to hire a man in a kilt with the juevos to wear a kilt to the interview, or will they want a dreg that just needs a job....? Difficult call.

Think its a call each person has to make on their own depending upon the circumstances.

Wore a kilt to be interviewed for a board of directors position, still got the "job."

Since the Midwest/Great Plains are not known for their ethic inclusiveness (i.e. it's very unusual to see a guy wearing a kilt), I'd do as ThistleDown suggests and dress as if you can start immediately. Rex and others are spot on. If the job includes wearing the kilt, then be sure you wear it 'correctly', appropriate to the job. (e.g.: if it's a ren fair position, I wouldn't wear modern garb).

Here, here! Dress as if you could start today.

I did wear a kilt to a job exit interview. Not the same situation as an interview, but it made me happy.

*Disclaimer* Last job interview I has ended up with me being engaged to the owner/interviewer, so take this with a mine of salt.*

Have worn my kilt to various job related functions that could get me job leads, such as Job Fairs, Paper Presentations, etc. To the actual interview, I'd be more hesitant unless, as others have said, they have already seen me dress *well* in a kilt. Not "kilt and t-shirt on a lazy Sunday" Declan, but all out - "Jacket, Tie, white shirt, nicest kilt" etc. Because if they haven't seen me dressed up, they may be mislead that I only wear casual kilts, and wouldn't be able to present the company image.

Course, you could always do research, get a feel for the company, and if they are not fond of kilts, work there and keep looking for that kilt friendly job.
