The leather garters are 18th century for holding up bag hose with kilt, or hose with knee breeches. Very common among reenactors since there was no 18th century elastic and knit hose was like bag hose. The hose I have on were a retirement gift from my art teacher at my elem. school and without the garters, they fall down! The leather vest is from Wilson leather , but my wife redid it. The snaps are hidden under the strip of tartan down the front, and the ties at the side are matching tartan instead of the original leather laces. When I was principal, I would wear the vest with kilt to my elem. school sometimes. Central administration (supt. of schools, ***'t supt., etc.) looked askance at this, but you know, they never seemed to bother me too much.... Malcolm

Well done, Malcolm! Like the different tartans, together, which I understand is very period of the times re-enact. Hmm, I wonder if I could get away wearing my new multi tartan waistcoat with a tartan kilt. After all, MacMillan of Rathdoen does with his bow ties.

Mael....I think you should! A dark kilt like this box pleat one would look good with the waistcoat. In fact, when I saw the photo of that waistcoat, I told my wife that is our next project. We have enough pieces of tartan around, we can put squares together and then cut out and sew the waistcoat! AND, I like all the reds in it. Sweet!
