I like Monkey's idea. Especially since the reason I haven't been able to attend the monthly kilt nights and the weekly Celtic nights is because I work evenings during the weekend but a daytime event like the whisky tasting we did last year in Alameda or the walk about we did in Santa Cruz we did the day after Burns Night sounds like a grand idea and should be compatible with a lot of peoples schedules.

We could try the "floating kilt night" ...or "kilt day" or whatever, for a bit and reconvene.
Weekends tend to be rough for me during Games season, since I have my other hobby to feed..namely, sailing and that happens on weekends. If I sail once a month and go to a Games on another weekend, that's two or three of the eight weekend days, gone. It can be done, it's just a bit dicey.
I'd love to get to the Saint Georges distillery, though, since I missed the last tour.
It might be good if activities varied between evenings and weekend days.

I agree with the "floating kilt activity day/night" idea, but we need to plan things well in advance so we can get as many folks committed as possible.
So who wants to sponsor/plan the first one?
Be well,

The "floating event" looks like a good way to get together regularly. Weekends allow for a greater range of travel. Finding a roomy, family friendly place that won't pinch everyone's pocketbook will be the challenge. Will start gathering a list of places for consideration.
As Alan notes, weeknight travel for us south of Belmont is not very attractive. The DCB site lists Angelica's Bristo in Redwood City and Jersey Joe's in San Carlos which both serve Scotch Ale. int: Haven't been to the Tied House since working in Mountain View (don't miss the commute) but the food and beer was good.

This is not intended as a permanent or perhaps even universal solution, but my favorite coffee establishment, Barefoot Coffee Roasters, on Stevens Creek Blvd in Santa Clara, will be having a small piper on Friday, March 20th along with several other folk musicians. The place is not large and there is NOT beer, but I thought I would mention it for those as might be interested.

April Gathering
Never mind, just realized the date I was proposing conflicts with Palm Springs/Hamish gathering. Doh!
Best regards,

I like the idea of switching up the locations and days. I must admit, the Belmont location could not have been much more convenient for me, but I tended to avoid the place due to the crowds, increasing beer prices and inconsistent food. It was great when we started, but the whole experience has gone down hill over the past year. I find it more enjoyable in the late fall and early winter, when the place is less crowded. But, the Halloween event has become a circus and many times I find the music to be overly loud or just plain annoying.
That said, I would not be adverse to trying new places, whether they were in Sacramento or the South Bay. There are plenty of pubs all over the Bay Area and I can't think of a better excuse to go check out some new places!
I might suggest we do a rigorous search for Scottish Pubs in the 9 Bay Area Counties.. one of note would be Edinburgh Castle Pub at 950 Geary in SF. It has been open since the 50's and is rated as one of the top 5 bars/pubs in SF. It has also been rated as one of the "Top 10" Scottish Pubs in CA.
Of course, another good pub would be the Prince of Wales Pub located at 106 E. 25th Ave. in San Mateo, near the train tracks by the Expo Center. 650-574-9723
Lastly, the White Cockade Public House, located at 18025 State Highway 9 in Boulder Creek, CA, is an excellent Scottish Pub, tucked away in the redwood forests northeast of Santa Cruz, not far from Saratoga and Los Gatos.
A pot luck BBQ might be a nice idea or even a weekend group camping trip this summer.. maybe at Big Basin State Park?

Like your ideas, Mark. Will volunteer to assist in research. Edinburgh Castle is sort of like places in Las Vegas: best not seen in the daytime. The neighborhood is - ah - interesting. We found the White Cockade had closed down last year when we were at Ben Lomond. And Yelp lists the Prince of Wales as closed also. So more research is needed.

To All,
Since the third weekend of the month has come and gone (and that the DCB's "Beer Friday" is coming up this week) I suggest the Nor Cal Rabble aim for either evening of Saturday April 18th for our first new venue kilt night.
I would suggest the Tied House for this first run.
Cheers
Jamie
