My Tartans:

X Marks pleated to the Gray Stripe. Because THIS IS MY CLAN.
Isle of Skye pleated to "No Stripe". Just because
Hudson's Bay Co. pleated to the Multi-Colored Stripe. Because I now live in Canada
Leatherneck pleated to the Yellow Stripe. My other Clan colors

In that order.

Coffee Brown Dress Model. This is what I wear when I'm not in the shop.

If you are going to accessorize, perhaps you need to prioritize?? For me, it is Clan and birthright first. I am a MacNeil of Barra,no matter what else I have become,Father-Husband-Soldier-Businessman-friend etc. I just can't imagine abandoning my Heritage for "earth tones". If you won't wear your own Tartan, why would WE want you wearing ours.

Oh... Since the Wizard brought up solid color kilts, I have a Buzz Kidder khaki canvas kilt.

That's outside of tartan and Highland attire, though.

I have a Douglas Modern tank.

It's my family tartan, and it's my favorite. I'm lucky that I descended from a clan that did not find it necessary to have an unappealing tartan.

Forrester Modern is my family tartan, being a Foster, and my original 13oz tank is in that tartan (only available in 13oz). I have fabric for a handmade in the Hunting Forrester when I can afford to have it finished up. Forresters are septs of both several MacDonalds as well as Douglas clans, and I have 16oz tanks in Ancient MacDonald, Ancient Douglas, and 13oz MacDonald of Glencoe (only wt available), as well as a Modern Douglas in acryllic 8yd casual on order, and a recently acquired 6yd casual in 16oz Lochcarron Weathered MacDonald.Those are my direct name family tartans.

I have fabric for Barb T to turn into a 16oz Kingussie pleated handmade tank in Allen 1996, as I have discovered that three sequential Foster men in my lineage married three sequential Allen women, all related---an aunt and two nieces by different uncles)---yes, second cousins marrying second cousins not once but two generations in a row-----So I actually have more Allen blood in me than Forrester.

I also have tanks in Black Isle and Isle of Skye district tartans becasue I like them, and a handmade Maple Leaf tank from Barb queued up for similar reason. I also have a tank in the original Braveheart tartan (from the movie) because I love the look and feel----hey, I still like the movie, historically accurate or not.

There is also MacMillan blood in my geneologyand I may someday pick up something in that familey vein if I find something accurate and attractive, but for now, between what I have and what I have on order or lined up I am pretty well flush for my needs and desires. Never know, though, what will make itself available that might strike my fancy. Ancient Red Douglas, a custom weave, is already tempting me regularly, and if the GBP falls any further relative to the dollar I may pull the trigger on that one some day.

So family ties is my theme, except for several district/fashion tartans of particular beauty.

My family has links with Mac Alpin, Robertson, Hay, Montgomery and Macdonald of the Isles clans.
I wear three kilts : Mac alpin, Robertson red ancient and Robertson hunting.

Well I have a 8 yrd on the way in Cochrane Modern which I am a Cochrane and a member of Clan Cochrane. After I get my scotweb points I'm going to order another 8 yrd in cochrane ancient.
As far as favorites, I have many. Those that come to mind are Gordon, Black Watch, Mackenzie, Buchanan. Tartans are so varied and rich it's really hard to pick a favorite.

I can say my tartan is my Leatherneck box pleat, made by Steve at Freedom Kilts.. I also wear the Irish Saffron, for my Irish Blood.. I might end up getting a Cleghorn tartan because of my Scottish ancestory that is traced back to the 1600's and back (granted this tartan was created in 2002).

my favorites.. well... the Leatherneck and Saffron.

Thanks to this website.. I have settled into wearing a couple of kilts, and concentrate on the accessories...

Keith modern is my choice. Though it's sort of similar to a black watch, I have to do the double take sometimes to make sure I'm not walking by a distant relative.. I consider myself fortunate that the family tartan just happens to match a color/scheme that I would normally wear a lot of.

I do like the American national or Scottish-American (I've seen it called both) tartan a lot though...maybe in a future kilt.
