I've worn a Rolex Submariner since 1967. In all of that time it has only required servicing twice, despite having taken a pounding on three continents in all sorts of conditions. I replaced the bracelet twice-- once after I crashed a car at something in excess of 160mph, and again last year when that bracelet was mangled when I was tinkering with my Morgan. I've found the watch to be utterly reliable, and as accurate as a Mauser rifle. I have two other watches-- a Patek Phillipe and my mugger's watch, a Citizen that looks expensive but only cost $29, that I wear when I'm going into DC.
Here's the thing; if you want a Rolex-- get one. People who live their lives by Consumer Reports, or who constantly count the cost of everything, usually miss out on the tiny joys in life. The watch won't get any cheaper, you're not getting any younger, and if you don't indulge yourself once in a while, what's the point of life?

I'm not much of a Rolex person. They are nice, but there are MANY nice watches out there. Look around, find the perfect watch, and get that one. Don't buy a Rolex just because it says Rolex on the face.
However, if you find that perfect watch, and it says Rolex on the face, buy it! But shop around first, a Rolex is such an obvious choice, be an original!!

I have two Rolex watches. One a pocket watch made in 1912 and is still going strong today and an "Explorer" that has never failed, or, been serviced, in the last 20 something years. Both watches have had a pretty hard life. As you well know, there are other watches around that are equally as good, maybe even better, as a Rolex, so get the one you like, for the very best that you want to afford and enjoy it.

Why NOW!!!
I always wondered why they give you a watch at retirement, when time is no longer an issue. Wouldn't it make more sense to receive a time piece at the start of your working life ????. Just a casual observation.

What! Be on time, whilst at work! That would never do!

I wear a watch built by Factory 121. It's no Rolex/Omega/what have you, but it's a fine watch and was custom built to my specifications. It also has the benefit of being significantly cheaper than most all the other Swiss watches out there. It's a great watch for what you pay, IMHO.

Just played around with Factory 121's site. I like it, quite interesting.

A silly question, but do the american armed services have a compulsory superannuation scheme?
NZ armed forces have, and it ensures after you have done your 20, or 25 that you get a rather large payout, to assist with the...normalisation denumber and ranking process...depending on specialization and pay rates, some people walk away with on average 250K
