Lead front page article in this morning's Vancouver Sun: "Members of Parliament from all parties voted unanimously Wednesday in favour of a Bloc Quebecois motion calling on the government to come up with a way to integrate seal pelts into the athletes’ uniforms.

“With the upcoming Winter Olympics that will be in Vancouver in 2010, the government has a chance to offer some concrete action to promote seal products,” Bloc Quebec MP Raynald Blais said."

It has been a long time since every Member of Parliament in Canada voted in favour of any motion.

Looks like sealskin sporrans for all our athletes! I don't personally wear sealskin sporrans because I don't wear something I don't eat. But I don't begrudge others choice to wear one.

EU regulations also force fishermen to throw fish accidentally netted that do not fit certain specifications back into the sea. Their swim bladders are already ruptured and they will not survive or breed afterwards but they must be wasted on principle nevertheless.

One wonders where the logic is.

Sporrans are a limited market and seal fur ones are not going to severely decrease the seal population. So it can be seen as an attack upon a traditional way of dress by the anti fur brigade who are not directly affected themselves by the move and who have long had the freedom of choice to go for substitutes themselves.

Exactly. With an enlarged international ban culling will continue and the carcasses will be used as before. It's the good use of the skins we are discussing here. Sporrans are traditional, as are coats.

Not sure if this is a good or bad thing as it depends on your personal viewpoint, and I respect all other's.

One effect, however, for those who do not mind owning or wearing sealskin sporrans, is that there is likely to be a good sale on those products over the next 6 months as stores try to purge their stocks to come into compliance, which means more product and better prices for the buyers.

And that would be from seals who have already paid the price, not likely from newly killed seals.

    I just can't stop!

If it's a sporran ya want and made o'seal,
Nows the time to make the deal.
It seems that Parliament has banned,
Not just the new, but all on hand.
So if it's seal skin that ye lust,
    Better buy it, before August.

    Sorry.

Luckily, it looks as though kitten sporrans are still legal.

    Same old same old.
Funny how people have contempt for politicians -- on the one side, but I suppose not on the other.
