I keep a tiny folding knife in my sporran for my nails and the odd assassination.

I have worn mine many times in Cincy, and in Columbus, as have others here. Must be a particular crowd that objects. Wear what you like. I am thinking about the bottle opener for BBQ's & outdoor parties, just seems functional and will be a great surprise for guests

Being something of a traditionalist, I insist on wearing my sgain dubh to anything semiformal or formal, and a daywear one for anything like highland games, camping, fishing... anywhere a knife may be useful. Anyone who has a problem with it needs to quit crying and grow a backbone. Just my 2 cents worth... (Sorry if this seems extremist of me, but my feeling is- if you don't like them, then don't wear them, but don't tell me that I can't. See my signature!)

I used to wear a belt knife around Cincinnati all the time with no comment made. (pre-kilt days). I don't see a difference, really. I believe Rex Tremende is from Cinti, and is fairly traditional in his dress. I wonder if he can shed some light?

It's strange for me to hear about people being so tight about such things in other parts of the country (or world)

Here in the NW, legally speaking you can walk around the streets with a broadsword as long as it's not concealed, and you should be fine as long as you conduct yourself in a normal sane manner.

If you're kilted, wearing a sgian dubh has (for me) been a total non issue with everyone I encounter.

I have however seen people as a gag carry other items in their sock such as nice hand-forged forks, deer antlers with no blade, interesting chunks of twisted hardwood etc etc.
Wear your kilt proudly, but carry a big stick

It initially seemed strange to me, too.

I spent most of the latter half of my "formative years" in Montana (where openly carrying pretty much everything was legal at the time and not unusual in rural areas). After spending some time enlisted following that, moving to California and then Florida as a civilian was a bit of a switch for me.

As a civilian in Florida, you can openly carry only pepper spray, a non-lethal stun gun or a standard, folding pocket knife. Everything else is illegal without a permit -- including fixed blade knives with only two exceptions: plastic knives and blunt-bladed table knives. This is especially strange to me considering the size of the state and the amount of it that is still undeveloped and wild, but it is good to know that I am legally entitled to butter my bread at dinner with impunity.

But it is the law and, out of respect for those in civilian uniform, I won't wear a Sgian (or anything that looks like one) as long as I do not possess a permit. If we ever move to an open carry state or if I ever feel the need to acquire a permit, I will wear a Sgian Dubh.

But, for now, the top of my hose stays empty.

A "knife permit" forsooth?! Do such things even exist? How 'bout "baseball bat permits"? It's bad enough that some states (like mine) require a permit to excercise certain constitutional rights, but the day I'm required to get a "knife permit" is the day I give up on my once-free country....

Slow down there partner, those generalizations are coming a little fast and loose.

Portland may be that forgiving, but your statement does not apply to all of the Northwest. It CERTAINLY doesn't apply to Seattle.

As as been stated many times before in many different threads, Please consult your local laws! If anyone needs help in finding your local statutes, I'd be happy to assist.

Just a warning this time. All right, you're free to go. Just remember to use your turn signal and check your blindspot before you pull back in to traffic.

    Dummies carried by dummies?

There is, I suppose, a difference between being kilted and having a sgian dubh and wearing a turban and having a kirpan-- although for the life of me I can't see it. Both are defensible on cultural grounds.

My personal attitude is you either wear/carry a sgian dubh, or you don't. Fakes are, in my opinion, the hallmark of the PC woos.

I've carried a pipe, as well as a cigar in there on past occasions - not at the same time of course...

But if you're not a smoker, you could always carry a pipe without the tobacco, or perhaps a wooden dowel stained to look like a cigar. I believe some costume shops stock some plastic "prop" cigars and pipes...

Sorry, lack of sleep is making me a bit....off....I suppose.

    No sarcasm/disrespect intended.
