It's never worth arguing with these morons. If they're so insistent on their belief that you are actually wearing clan whatsits tartan, you aren't going to convince them otherwise. Best course of action might simply be to say, "Well it's a good thing I ran into you. I'd better notify the weavers right away!"

Once, I was wearing my Gordon Tartan (* Funny off topic story about that below), and a fellow employee came up and asked what tartan it was --- then told me that he was fairly sure it was a _____ (I don't remember Anderson?), he went on about how he was in his sisters wedding and she married a guy from ____ clan and this was the tartan they wore -- oh, and something else was wrong with my kilt, it was missing the red pin stripe. DOH! (I later that day got a question from another co-worker from _____ clan who asked if I knew if we were related because our family tartans were so close -- just that little red stripe of difference. )

*Funny story: I bought my Gordon kilt shortly after my marriage to honor my husbands family -- half of them are Gordons. I didn't tell my husband ahead of time because I wanted it to be a surprise. I got it, showed him, then told him the tartan. He laughed and laughed. Turns out the "Gordons" are the branch of his family that isn't from Scotland/Ireland/England --- they were German, and when the came to America, choose the new last name "Gordon" as it sounded so American, so they wouldn't endure any anti-German immigrant prejudice. Then they moved to New York, and endured a good deal of anti-Irish prejudice. Oh well, I still like my Gordon kilt.

Cheers

I never had anyone except at festivals, and they tend to be a little bit tipsy (I am being polite)

The closest I've ever came To arguing about my tartan was at a works retirement do at a bowling club in Aberdeen, I was standing at the bar when one of the regulars an older gentleman came up and asked the usual "what's the tartan?" to which I answerd Cooper and he said it looked quite like the Boyd tartan. Over all we got on well and it was a nice evening with the gentleman reminding me to give mr Boyd his kilt back in the morning.

I've had people ask me twice about my Scott. Basic conversation:

What tartan is that?
Scott.
I know it's a scot, but what tartan?
Scott - with two t's.
Oh. I didn't know there was a difference.
Well, there is. The family started using two t's to make the distinction between being from Scotland or of the family.

The Scott clan tartans are interesting and varied, John. For the KC games, Anita got some Ancient Green Scott yardage and a kilted skirt form Sportkilt because that's all the clan stuff she could find on such short notice. Beautiful tartan.

We had several people at the clan tent tell us that couldn't be a Scott tartan, because it should be red. Fortunately Anita had JPEG's of all the Scott tartans she could find, (at least 12) and disabused several of their assumptions.

We know just enough not to be telling people they're wrong about their stuff.

I had a lovely lady in the Buchanan tent last week insist that she could find me the appropriate tartan from her big book. I had chosen my weather saffron for the day to avoid any misgivings about affiliations. She steered me toward Tara, I'm not sure of the reasoning exactly, based on my maternal grandmothers maiden name Breazeale(Brazil). It's a nice one and I may eventually go there since it has both Irish and Southern associations, but it's far down my list.
