Without missing a beat, I matched her voice:
"I've always wanted to know! What do you women wear under your skirt!"
There was dead silence in the meat department of Giant Eagle, until her husband started to giggle. She then fixed him with a death glare and moved on.
I tried a variation of that one time saying, "I would never ask YOU what you're wearing." She told me a thong and demanded an answer. I replied "A gentleman would never tell."

I usually go with the shoes and socks, but I reall liked your response. I'll have to remember that one for future use.

Someday, when I happen to have underwear on and get asked that question, I'm gonna reach down at the waist of my kilt, find the underwear waist, and pull it up over the kilt waist so she can see for herself...

I don't think I could do that. now, maybe if I had a modern jeans waist kilt, but otherwise that would be a wedgie of doom - self inflicted.

That one is getting filed away for future use, along with Grant's "I wouldn't know - I'm
English."
(The resulting look on that woman's face was priceless. )

Good one! Personally I prefer responding, "How warm are your hands?" (Thanks to The Wizard of BC for that)
At a gig this past Wednesday I was off buying a beer between sets and there were a group of women standing behind me in line. One asks, "what are you wearing under your kilt?" I answered, "socks and boots." [Chuckle] After I got my beer I walked up to her and said, "that was the polite answer. The best answer is 'How warm are your hands?'" [Chuckle]...
After we finished our last set the woman came up to the stage and said to me, "My hands are warm now!"

the last woman who asked me what was worn beneath the kilt... I replied... "I am Irish, so there is nothing but my Lucky Charms...".. it gave her a chuckle...

That was a great response, got to file it away, of course it would only work for some of us though.
