Help finding a District Tartan?
I'm starting to put together my "wish list" of kilts to acquire. Eventually I'd like to get one in Kerr Modern (since that's the only so-far-identifiable Scot in my ancestry), and then I thought I'd look for a district tartan that would be appropriate for the Kerrs. So, that's where I could use some assistance.
The locations that seem most associated with the Kerrs would be Ferniehurst Castle and Monteviot House, both located near Jedburgh. I have been unable to locate a Jedburgh tartan, but I did find a Roxburgh tartan. Jedburgh is located in Roxburghshire, so that seems to me the closest "match."
Any better suggestions? My Scotland geography is woefully poor, so if anyone with more knowledge would like to offer comment, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sure seems like the Roxburgh would be a good choice. But we've got a very knowledgeable member from the Borders region who might weigh in here with more information.
btw, I own a tank in Roxburgh Red, Ancient colors, and it's beautiful. I have an immigrant ancestor from the area... (have a Kerr in the family tree as well, for that matter!) Happy tartan hunting.

I think the Roxburgh tartan would be the most appropriate for the Kerrs and that's what I recommend in my Compendium of District Tartans.
There is a "Jedforest" tartan. (Jedforest is an 800 acre park outside of Jedburgh). It was designed by Alistair Buchan of Lochcarron in 1996.

Thanks for the replies. KFCCarter, I took a look in your photo albums, and the Roxburgh Red is indeed a smart looking tartan.

Thank, it is a beauty. The kilt in those pics was made from Lochcarron strome in the ancient colors. It looks even better in person!

My advice would be go for the Roxburgh tartan. The ancient city of Roxburgh which is nowadays just a small village is only about three miles from Kelso. The 10th Duke of Roxburghe, Guy Innes-Ker lives in Floors Castle, Kelso. Another former Ker stronghold was Cessford Castle which is about three miles from Kelso the other way from Roxburgh, but still within the historic county of Roxburgh.
Besides the town tartans mentioned by Chas, there is also Teviotdale tartan. Although the River Teviot flows to Kelso where it joins the Tweed the Teviotdale tartan is more associated with Elliot country further upriver and indeed it includes the light blue and chocolate brown of the Elliot tartan.
