    Thanks for the leads

Thank uyou to those who responded. I sent off an email to Higgins. And hope to be at the MD Renfest next week end so I will check out Ravenswood Leather. When I was there a couple of weeks ago I wore a sporran and didn't even think to look for pouches.

    Regards,

    Bob

Internal pockets are much nicer than external ones. Done right, they can hold quite a bit of stuff, and not be noticeable. They need to be large, properly hung from the waistband, and properly engineered. It helps not to put bricks in them, either.

I personally use of of these:

    http://www.nativearth.net/bag.html

The attach right to my kilt belt. I wear it on my left hip, and it stays out of the way just fine. I hate those pockets, myself, so I understand. This thing is a great alternative- and it has a nice hitorical kind of look that fits well with a kilt, too!

    I use one of these:

It's a WWII German infantry breadbag, which I wear on my right hip. My breadbag is a grey/blue 'feldgrau' colour and seems to suit my Black Watch kilt.

Do a search on ebay for belt bag and it should bring up a number of options, many very attractive and well done, or you can make them youself with a little materials from your local hobby store. I often wear both, a small belt bag for the frequently used essentials---cash, credit card, car keys, loose change or a small change purse---leaving my sporran available for stuff like cell phone, wallet, eyedrops, chapstick---stuff I need less frequently but still need to carry. On days or in situations where the sporran is a nuisance (golfing for example) a belt bag tucked over the appropriate hip is out of the way yet still accessible without being a bulky dangling object in front of me.

One thing to consider before delving into belt bags is what your belt widths are, and what widths will be accepted by your belt bag loop. Kilt belts tend to be 2-2.5 inches width while many belt bags only accommodate 1.75 inch or smaller belts, so be ware.

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"

Drummers wear their sporrans on their hip; while dancing men move their sporrans to their hip; I move my sporran to my hip while driving - but it is still a sporran.

I think that a decision needs to be made. If you want to know about Alternative Sporrans then there has been some good advice. If on the other hand you want to know about Alternatives to Sporrans then you should consider moving your cargo space off your belt altogether. Professional photographers use a waistcoat with lots of pockets. There are 'outdoors' vests with poachers pockets in the small of the back. There are hundreds of different types of jacket to suit all types of activity.

Your choices are not limited to different types of sporran.

Just as an aside - I have noticed that any pouch worn on the hip tends to make the wearer look fat - not implying anything, just an observation.

    Regards

    Chas

Good point. But obviously in hot weather this may not be an attractive option. I personally like the versatility of pockets and pouches when wearing my kilts. But, as you say, it's all horses for courses and personal tastes.

I've just found a pic my co-driver took of me whilst we were enroute to the Nurburgring in Germany in June 2008. (Please excuse my pasty white legs!)

I hear what you are saying Stilletto. To my mind, it doesn't matter what the bag originally was, if you use it as a sporran - it is a sporran. I know someone that uses a very expensive leather camera case as a sporran and it works.

I hadn't noticed your legs till you mentioned it - now I can't think of anything else.

    Regards

    Chas
