Thx for the idea, I'm parting my kilt outfit together on the cheap and this was a good find.
I have never had a belt with a bigger fancy buckle, would it be hard to change this belt over to one with a buckle? do the larger buckles use tension to hold the belt in place?
thanks

I had some Kelly green and some dark green Rit dyes mixed up from another project, and poured them together along with a little more water, and heated it almost to a simmer. I put one of the Home Depot belts in it and left it for a day and a half. I then took it outside and let it dry in the sun. After that I rubbed a good amount of mink oil into it, to seal in the color. It didn't dye quite as dark as I'd hoped, but it looks nice, nonetheless. I don't have any pictures, and you might get different results if you try the process yourself.

Nice job!
I would just keep a close eye on the leather itself. I've never heard of using Rit dye on leather - I'd be worried about it bleeding out or rubbing off later. The mink oil paste will help seal it in, but only to a certain extent. You'll want to be very careful so that the dye doesn't end up bleeding onto your kilt when you get good and sweaty.

I just use shoe polish on my belts when they start losing color......might try that

Great job. Thanks for posting it.
I think I'll make a black one. Have some Fiebings (sp?) leather dye which usually works well.

Very nice! I just finnished my last semester of my Police foundations diploma so I understand the need to be frugal, however I think for my next kilt belt i'll do something similar prolly in black though

As I recall Lowe's had the belt in black as well, though its been a while since I checked.

Another dye that might work is made by Kiwi (the same as the shoe polish) I know it comes in black and dark brown. I have only used the black and it was OK but not great for what I was doing.
