I have to say that the balmorals from Glengarry Hats that I've seen "in person" always looked undersized to me as well....

I can vouch for Mackie. I just got a custom-size, custom color combination Balmoral which fits perfectly. PM Redshank and he'll take good care of you.

Khaki Balmoral
Try Pennys of Thunder Bay and look under products.

I got a khaki from Penny's and like it fine. However, it is not very large diameter. I think it might be current Canadian military issue. There are no ribbons on the back, and no cockade(?) on the side for a crest badge. I put my own black ribbon cockade on it. I also changed the toorie. (I wanted a red one, that's why).
They are good to deal with.

Terry, I think you are looking for something neither Mackie nor Glengarry (or any other manufacturer I know of) make in quite the large size you have in mind -- given the pic you showed us.
You are looking for a "doolander" and I had one made by our own Lady Chrystel in a wonderful tweed a year or two ago. It's stuffed in a boot in the hall at home so I don't have it here in Vancouver to photograph for you. I'm sure that Robert can produce a pic or two very quickly if he's about -- or you could PM him.
I love the one Chrystel made me because it truly keeps the head warm and dry in the cold and wet winters of Inverness-shire. Hmmm, well actually it keeps my shoulders dry, too.

Here's a good page discussing CEF headgear.

I have the WPG tam. Wonderful. They are great to deal with. I got a nice, reasonably priced heavy pair of kilt hose that I love. I have the Gordon Highlander kilt. Wow! Great stuff so far.

Terry,
You did say "not hand knit"---I didn't know whether you meant that you did not want to knit it yourself, or you wanted it sewed up like a tam. I gather though, you want the one-piece Balmoral construction.
Since you expressed interest in my bonnet and piperdbh's here is an update---still work in progress, but getting closer. Click through to see it at original resolution. I cropped it down so that Flickr would not resize it for us.

I did take some care with the color this time, for your benefit. This was without flash under a "true color" OttLite. The background tartan is MacGregor of Cardney, so the red is sort of burgundy and very dark green.
I think I recall we are both using the same wool, which felts up in a very satisfying way. If you know a knitter, that part is dead simple. Basically mine was a bag big enough to cover my entire head, very loosely knit; but one trip through the washer pretty well did the job.
If the color appeals to you, the wool is Lion Brand "Fisherman's Wool" in Nature's Brown. $9 for 8 ounces of wool would probably make 2 bonnets of moderate size; I'm 7-5/8, and mine weighed out at 4.25 ounces. I got a bonnet, 2 pairs of mittens, and a small bit left over for my nine bucks plus time.
Diane Donald (unaspenser) makes a mean bonnet, too, though she usually has a waiting list.
