Welcome from the Cape Fear River Valley, NC, USA
I second all the advice on saving up until you can get a properly fitted, custom kilt. They are well worth the additional money, and once you have one, as long as your waist remains fairly constant (A waist is a terrible thing to mind) you will be able to wear it for the rest of your life!
(Perhaps this is the solution to the obesity epidemic? )

Salut et bienvenue au paradis du kilt.
À quel endroit au Québec?
Si vous n'êtes pas trop loin et si vous avez besoin d'aide ou de conseils, il ne faut pas se gêner.
There is a lot of good advices on this site, but I would add a casual from Burnett's & Struth.
Again, welcome to XMTS

Hello and welcome from Texas
I would also tell you to save and get a nice kilt, but the SWK Heavyweights are a quick fix if you want to get a kilt for beating around in. Barnett & Struth have some nice casuals for $200.00 CN which come in 13 or 16oz weight.. they also happen to be a forum advertiser so finding their site is easy.
Welcome again and enjoy the kilting experience..lol actually the "Addiction"! lol

Welcome from the other side of the Rockies. I'm sure you will find some answers here. Read all you can about various kiltmakers and the different types of kilts they can make: take your time to get an idea of what you really want, and all the while save, save, save. A really good kilt, made to measure, is a thing of beauty you won't regret spending on. Living in Quebec, I'd say you're on the right track with 16oz material: even here in "lotus land" a 13oz can sometimes be a bit chilly.
EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.
