Actually, now that I think about it, I wore my khaki canvas kilt to Home Depot a few times back in the day, and nothing interesting happened.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

My my Alan! What a pleasant day indeed

I can't imagine Alan H having anything but good karma

Karma smiled really big at you.... when we get to that point to focus on the positives, and not the negatives, we find karma smiles a lot... I am sure the first woman knew it was a kilt, but couldn't find the right word... no sense getting uptight over every incident...

Sounds like a good day, pleasant conversation and nice comments. It's nice how things like that work out.

That's often my impression as well when a woman offers a genuine compliment but refers to it as a "skirt." To digress a moment, I was surprised this weekend when an older man in a nearby suburban town, asked if that was Utilikilt that I was wearing. (It was - brown workman). That same night I got two compliments at a local bar/dance joint from strangers, one from a rather nice looking woman (both of our spouses were there) and the other from a young man.
Rock on, Alan.
Best regards,
Jake

Yeah nice when that happens- "gorgeous", "smart" and "dapper" are three adjectives that have been applied to a photo of a kilted me with the wife that I have on display above my desk at work.
