I'm with you Chas and I've seen that 34 quid wool kilt of yours and you'd never know it wasn't made for you. I'm a pretty standard bloke too and can make 24" length work fine. I have bought off the rack before and would again if the deal was good.
I'm taking a rest from kilt buying for a while though. My kids are complaining about their shoes being made from cornflakes boxes and sticky tape. I've tried to tell them we all have to make sacrifices in life but it doesn't seem to be going down too well.

I have bought off-the-rack and found that the fit wasn't much of a problem--it was more a matter of quality. I currently have two off-the-rack kilts and I suspect only an expert might be able to tell the difference. I have two made to measure, and they are both wonderful. Of course, made to measure is not a guarantee of anything either, unless you are confident of the skills of the kiltmaker.
EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.

Can I assume we're talking about tanks rather than mail order?
My kilts are all "off the rack."
Kilts bought "off the rack" are not an easy sell.
I've test fitted hundreds of suits, and a few kilts. An off the rack suit is too time consuming to find the correct fit. Even more difficult I think would be an "off the rack" kilt.
Having a premium tank is another find altogether.
For more than five hundred dollars, and stretching toward a thousand, my kilt will be tailored to my body for the perfect fit.
Made to specs is the better way to buy a kilt.
I've posted a "no" vote.

Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?

As a general rule probably not, but there is always the exception. At one of the Games last year I bought a completed MacDonald of Glencoe tank. Someone had ordered it, paid half, and never picked it up. I paid the balance and it was mine. It was a bit tight but now that I've lost some weight it fits perfectly - and the price was right. My only complaint is that it is pleated to the sett and I prefer pleating to the stripe.

If a QUALITY kilt is premade and on the rack and happens to be my size, I would buy it. I own a couple Utilikilts which were all 'off the rack', but fit me nicely.
Granted, if it's the same price and I don't mind waiting, I'd rather have one made (or make one ) to my measurements.

That's why I own 2 USA Kilts and no Utilikilts. A custom made USA Kilt in my size costs like $20 more than an off the rack Utilikilt. So why bother with a UK when I can get a USAK or 2 Amerikilts? It all comes down to "if the price is right."

No thanks, I am sure I am in the minority here but that is my opinion. I am a firm believer in the old adage, you get what you pay for. So if you see a great deal on a pre made kilt that seems to be good to be true, well, it is what it is. Just my two cents worth.

I read the intent of the original post to be about a custom made kilt or one of similar / equal quality, just ready made.

No, I've not seen one that in a store that was in the right tartan for my tastes, and the ones that we have that are not tartan are hand made x-kilts.
Of course if I found one on the self that was the right size and tartan, I would not object.

Yes but...
Only if it was much cheaper. So maybe I will buy an ex-rental.
The reason, I wouldn't wear a bespoke suit while mucking around outside. So why would I do that with my real kilts?
