Thanks all for the advice. I pulled the trigger this morning and ordered a Tweed Argyll With 5 Button Waistcoat from St. Kilda.
Let the Jonesing begin...
I'll do a full writeup with pictures when it arrives.

I recently bought a St Kilda tweed Argyll with waistcoat:

I'm very happy with it. A plus for me here in California is that the tweed is rather lightweight.
About the sizing and fit, it's the same as I wear in a US sportcoat, 48.
It fits perfectly.
The waistcoat is cut with some room in the belly area, which I require at this time.

I was surprised by the waistcoat fit. I have a St. Kilda Argyll that I got as a trade, the jacket is a near perfect fit, but the waistcoat is HUGE on me. It fits fine in the shoulders, but the belly room is such that it hangs down to well-below the top edge of where my sporran should sit. It's all for the best, as I'm thinking about having the bottom edge tailored to a straight fit 4-button anyway, so I'll just have it taken in then.

I, too, have a St. Kilda Argyle, size 44R. Normally, I would wear a 42R in US size. Many here, on XMTS, suggested to go up a size, so I did. The jacket is good, if just a hair big. However, the vest is more like a 46R...long in front and ready for a big belly, which I do not have. Think I'll order a 42 soon.

It was a risk but it turned out to be pretty nice given the price point-- there's a **** tailor on eBay that makes a decent jacket for pretty cheap.

EDIT-- looks like his prices doubled so it's not as good a deal as it was a couple months ago.

So I got the email confirmation this morning that the jacket and waistcoat are being shipped today. So far I cannot say enough good things about dealing with St. Kilda. I will post details and photos after the package arrives.
