    Well, the way argyle hose work is that every diamond is knitted from a different ball of yarn. You can knit the stripes in at the same time, but then you'd have a ball of yarn for each stripe, and that's a lot of trailing balls of yarn to keep track of.
    So Diane knits the main body with all the diamonds and then sews the stripes in afterwards, basically using a knit stitch done with a large yarn needle and yarn rather than a knitting needle.

    It's kind of fascinating to watch them be made.
