Hey Tinksdad,
I'm originally a Mississippi boy myself!
Come on up and visit a while. I'll be teaching a basic dyeing/staining class this Saturday from 10 to 12. Not sure you'd want to join in, unless you really want to learn that, at this point, but you're welcome to look over my shoulder for a bit. Maybe we can get you started in leather crafting or something while you're there...

Ok, so I taught a class at Tandy Memphis today and while there I started looking around for ideas for the sporran class I'm trying to work up. Found some interesting stuff.
This is a Tandy kit for a black powder bag. Very simple, (and very plain looking). Might be a bit large for a sporran, but wouldn't be a bad place to start a pattern from.

Also found this sheepskin. I've seen some formal sporrans made from this stuff, and Tandy's got it:

Sorry for the blurry pic, but my cam was running out of juice and had to snap a quick one. This would be for the more "adventurous", maybe? Zebra print rabbit skin..

There's a lot of leather there that would make a great sporran...with no tooling at all. I think I'm definitely going to offer the class...just have to get things set up and set a date.
Oh...I found some REALLY cool black "patent" leather. (not sure if that's the correct spelling for that). I just couldn't talk my wife into letting me make her a corset out of it...drats!

I know I'm dragging up an old thread; but life kind of got in the way after the last post (it does that some times!!).
I finally made way across the border and visited the store this morning. Talked to your wife for a few moments. And got a fantastic bargain to work my way up to eventually a sporran. Bought the Basic Starter set with the 5 simple (?) projects. They threw in a bag of scraps to practice on, and the 4 hour (2 session) class on leather carving. The next class starts on Elvis's birthday, I don't see any conflicts on my calendar, so I will probably be there. I will have screwed up enough of the practice pieces by then and will be ready for some professional instruction.

Congratulations...welcome to the addiction.. We still haven't scheduled a sporran class, but we're working on it. I'm looking forward to hanging out with ya there at Tandy and pounding some leather..

You know what's funny about that powder bag, Budd? I have a buddy who wears a fur sporran that's about the same size. Here's a picture of him with it on, from his band's website:

They threw their annual Christmas party this weekend. I as at the whiskey table nursing a shot of Highland Park during their intermission when he came on the mike and said "There's a black Kia minivan, liscence plate number ***enter my plate here*** about to be towed. The owner needs to go move it IMMIDIATELY!" It was of course my car he was talking about... I threw my shot down, ran out to the parking lot, only to find that I had left my dome light on. I went back in and told him "Paul, I totally misunderstood you! I thought you said my car was being towed!" He gave me this smarta** look and said "Was that your car? I did say it was being towed! Gets people's attention!" And then he grinned at me and walked away... That look of mischief on his face is not just good photography.... it's always there!!
Anyway, long story short and more to the point- the sporran in the picture here is the one he was wearing, and it's actually a bit bigger than that powder bag, and it still looks really good.

Yes you will have!! It's a fun, and frustrating, hobby. Takes a lot of practice! Budd does some damned fine work! You'll do well learning from him!
