My apologies for forgetting about Rule 10. It was not my intent to "flaunt the rules," just to make the members aware of this resource.
I find it rather sad that Matt would have to write such a post, and I would like to second toadinakilt's call for an exemption for such an important resource regarding kilts, tartans & Scottish history.

I whole heartedly agree that an exemption should be made in this matter. As well as being a sponsor/advertiser and contributor, I believe Matt and the STA are an extremely valuable resource for members of the forum.
The acquisition of the books by the STA can only benefit the members here, and perhaps educate more members of the general public regarding the thing that we all love, the KILT.

Agreed. I think Matt and STA are performing an extraordinary public service that certainly warrants consideration for an exemption.

I think that this is not violating the spirit of the rules. I would think that the rule is there to prevent people soliciting funds for whatever personal matters they may be attending to. This is a museum asking for support from those who use its resources and want to see those resources grow.

Just a small point of clarification. These books have been recently acquired by the Scottish Tartans Museum (STM), in Franklin, NC. The Scottish Tartans Authority (STA), based out of Crieff in Scotland, also has a rather large collection of historic tartan reference books (including many that are in the museum's newly acquired collection), but the web site in question is a project of the Museum, not the Authority.
I serve as the Director of the Scottish Tartans Museum. And since this past December I have had the pleasuring of being one of the Governors of the Scottish Tartans Authority. Though the two have similar names and similar goals in terms of education and promotion of Scotland's iconic tartan traditions, they are two separate entities.
Just didn't want there to be any confusion.... :-)

I agree completely.
If this isn't a special case, I don't know what one is.
It's not personal, and it's a resource that is particularly pertinent to the interests of most of our regular forumites.
Or as the more reactive might say,
Quick, he's being helpful! Somebody stop him!

In relation to Matts correction re the wrong initials being used, I humbly apologise for the A instead of the M.
It should be the Scottish Tartans Museum, STM (Need to proof read what I write )

For what it's worth, I'd like to throw in with the rest and agree that this is a special case.
...and one that's not likely to get out of hand in the future. I mean, how many non-profit organizations are there out there, who specialize in the promotion of tartan and the history of highland dress? If another one comes out of the woodwork in need of a little support, I say more power to them.
