Some of the most interesting pocket handkerchiefs I have run across are the ones issued to German enlisted men- they are usually solid with a two or three color plaid border. They are cheap and serviceable- and nicely stylish, too. I have studied the assorted methods and I think my fold is the "Dunaway", or a slovenly approximation of it.
I think white with a border is a very nice look, McBug. I am sure you attract admiring looks when you wear one- and well-deserved compliments, too. Thanks for this topic.

Actually, MacLowlife, I normally carry those cotton handkerchiefs in the front, left pocket of my trousers, or more often overalls, especially in my role as scarecrow.
I do have a few set aside for use with suit jackets. I would really rather have silk pocket-squares in the breast pocket of a jacket, though. I would still carry a few cotton ones hidden inside other pockets, and back in the day, in the sporran.
And what of the handkerchief in the sleeve of one's jacket?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Silk to show (placed in the top pocket, only used for conjouring tricks)
Linen to lend (in another jacket pocket, for the weepy ladies)
Cotton in the cuff (for your own use)

Found this link on YouTube of a lady demonstrating different methods of folding and placing a pocket square.

Unfortunately, Pleater, I do not have any Linen handkerchiefs; the poor, weeping ladies will just have to settle for weeping into cotton.

oh deary deary me - but as long as you make sure it is freshly laundered, maybe with just a teensy bit of starch around the edges, it will do.
Perhaps you should put handkerchiefs on your Christmas list?

Yes, Pleater, perhaps I will procure a linen handkerchief just for you to weep into. Though it will have to be unrequited weeping.
