Well Hamish is a trend setter by any standard, and he has many years of experience wearing the kilt to be at ease with what he wears. Make no mistake though, the outfit he is wearing, in your picture, is far from the norm of what those who do not have Hamish's knowledge and confidence might understand. And that understanding probably gets watered down a touch every mile further away from the UK'S shores you are. My advice is to seriously stick with, or maybe purchase, a tartan kilt and appropriate attire so that those that do not understand the kilt, might in the depths of their brain, at least attach some sort of vague reasoning and acceptance to tartan.
Just posing a few thoughts, that's all.

I am FAR from an expert, but here's my 2 bits:
Theatre, opera, ballet, concerts (those without mosh pits) fine dining and related milling about smartly--I choose a tweed argyll in colder weather or a black braemar for warmer weather. Both of mine incidently were 'cut down' by our own VMAC and she did an AMAZING job. I'm thinking of getting a lighter fabric jacket to have her do the same with as well.
When its far too warm for a jacket, I see nothing wrong with a waistcoat and dress shirt.
Mind you--I always wear a tartan kilt.

I do shirt and waistcoat sometimes not so much recently hogmanay was the last time that springs to mind. I feel that it looks smart when worn with a tie and still looks smart enough to be acceptable without a tie and rolled up shirt sleeves.
But then again I'm not that traditional seeing as a do own a suit like Hamish except in plain black. Sorry Jock

Drac,
This was my Christmas party attire last year, as well as my Burns dinner this year. I have a black Argyle that's rather lightweight, so I may consider wearing it for those "formal" events now but otherwise, I'm probably going to stick with this... (although that Black Stewart is no longer with me... and no comments about the hose please, this was pre-xmarks... )
