I only own a tank, and will only ever own tanks, so I view the kilt world in a more traditional way. I look as my kilt as the equivalant of dressier pants (cuffed Dockers and above). I'm not afraid anymore to wear a kilt in public, but if the occasion calls for shorts or jeans then I wear shorts or jeans. Going to a concert, to a nice upscale dinner, church or any Scottish Festival (I should say Celtic, because I haven't been to a "scottish" festival in years!) then it's "en Kilt" if the mood takes me. I also get a bit dressier for church..unlike most modern Catholics I wear a coat and tie as a minimum to Mass, when I go kilted its in a kilt jacket and tie (fashionable tie, not tartan) and with waistcoat if the occasion fits.

i have only owned a kilt for about a month now but i wear it as much as i can. wore it grocery shopping, to a friends house for dinner and a movie and even to a local arts festival, where i got lots of questions. i dont feel embarrassed or scared to wear it in public, in my high school days i was very much into the goth and metal style of dress and i wore all sorts of things that got all sorts of looks so i guess im just used to the stares and glares but i also rather like the attention. and i feel that if i wear it as much as i can i can hopefully convince other closet kilter to brush off the dust and be kilted on a more regular basis!

I maintain that if my ancestors could wear it as daily attire then so can I and I do so quite proudly. I have worn the kilt soley and aside from when I was a serving soldier do not own trousers.

Every bloke wants to wear the kilt to a greater or lesser degree. Ask 'em. They might tell you they don't but they do really.

I have a couple of mates who have worn the kilt as a one off and enjoyed themselves immensely while doing so. That's all very easy when there is a bunch of other kilties with you, you're safe in numbers but the thing that prevents these chaps from wearing a Kilt more often is the fear of being laughed at or accused of wearing a skirt or singled out in some other way.

They would never venture out alone and kilted because of the vulnerability they would feel. I also know blokes who would never wear a pink shirt for the same reason... "It's not manly" is the excuse. "You mean you're not manly enough to carry it off" is my, usually unspoken thoughts.

I've also noticed that people of such a mind, tend to wear what everyone else is wearing, be it a grey suit, a Nike tracksuit (and running shoes that weigh 15lb each... or at least look like they do) or the ubiquitous droopy jeans (depending on age and circumstance of course). It's a security in uniformity, don't break from the herd.

I'm pleased I don't have and have never had, these issues.

I'm not as easy going, live and let live as I may appear mind. This I do not get and it does my head in!! And my son does it all the time...

The incarcerated are not allowed belts for obvious reasons, and as a consequence p@nts often slipped from the waist. Speaking for myself, gang bangers, thieves, and other low brow individuals are not people I aspire to follow. On the other hand the list of kilted personalities is lengthy and laudable.

I noticed the 'herd mentality' at the church picnic this year. A lot of teenaged boys were wearing t-shirts, long (knee-length or slightly longer) athletic shorts, black crew-length athletic socks (many had the Nike swoosh), and open-toed sandals. Up to this year, other boys their age have been avoiding wearing anything that looks like a sock (even 'footies') when wearing shorts.

It wasn't that long ago that boys their age would have ridiculed anyone wearing shorts and socks (only their grandfathers wore crew-length socks - of any color - with shorts) and only nerds wore socks with sandals.

There are four or five kilted guys in my neighborhood, including a rabbi. So its not unusual for me to run into someone else wearing a kilt. At a recent street party, there were 4 guys with Utilikilts and two of us wearing more traditional kilts. I wear mine most weekends, and always to church.

I don't wear my kilt every day. There is usually no occasion in the dead heat of July and August for me to pipe and there are no Highland games during that time in my neck of the woods. We are having a Kilt Night Out tomorrow!

i only have just the one kilt at the moment, but i try to wear it at least two or three times a week, and since receiving it i have only not worn it once to a Real Salt Lake game.
Also i have been trying to convince some of my friends to get a kilt as well. i think two of them are about to fall over the resistance cliff, and buy one

Geesh, Nighthawk, I looked up Green Valley Ranch and remembered that I need to renew my passport. If for some reason I venture that far East I'll keep an eye out for you. Seriously though, I might drive out to Elizabeth this weekend. I'm not sure what gremlins are lurking at home that could interfere with my weekend.
