    Bog hoppin'

Sadly there isn't much information of that time frame. The highlanders weren’t very popular even among their own countrymen unless they were wealthy. Now lowlanders… just look to see what was in style at court and you’ve got it pegged. I have always been kind of tickled when folk insist that something is correct when in fact we just don't know because there just isn't much that is left as most things were destroyed, lost, or deteriorated with time unless conveniently dropped in a bog while hunting or something of the like. My guess would be that they carried what we would most likely carry... food, water, and tools. There are bits and pieces of things that someone always throws up in discussions like this and you have to pass it along to others or it too will be lost in time. I wish you luck and I’ll watch to see what’s said myself.

    Historical carabiners?
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I would think they would have carried that stuff in a plaid over their shoulder.

Let me ask, is your camping gear all authentic period gear, as well? You might be setting yourself up for failure if you are looking for period luggage to house modern-day camping equipment.

In either case, I think this thread should be moved to the Historical dress section, as it's really not about contemporary accessories to the kilt.

My friend and I are big into the Leave No Trace / More you know, less you carry practice, so I wouldnt be taking too much (besides water) especially on day trips, so I was wondering what they did so I can maybe adopt some practice. I suppose it's not a great deal different than any peoples of the ancient world, but figured I would ask!

    Thanks guys

I thought the whole point of a belted plaid was that you wore it over your leine/long shirt in the daytime. At night, it became your blanket and tent.

Apart from some sort of drinking vessel, a plate and if they were lucky a tinderbox, what else did they have to carry? A knife was already in their sock and/or arm pit, a sword and/or dirk at their waist, religious or pilgrim artefacts were worn around their neck or pinned to their clothing.

Would they have had a 'housewife' with needle and thread?

    Anything else?

    Regards

    Chas
