As has been pointed out these charges can be avoided if the sender declares a low value and that the item is a gift, but that means the sender will be making a misdeclaration and breaking the laws of both the country of origin and the country of destination.

You make a good point although I don't think those who do this realise the full implications of making a misdeclaration. If customs examine the package then the real loser is the recipient when the items are confiscated without compensation being given

It all sounds a very risky business. Sounds as though I need the sender to make a false declaration to minimise the duty and even then its a bit hit and miss, Thank you for all your advice I am glad that I havent yet ordered anything although I am sad that I am going to miss out on some quality products from overseas.

Practically grew up in Poole as my grandad lived in Parkstone and we used to go fishing on Poole quay, Used to buy tackle and bait from the little cubicle at the end which is still there, park at Baiter and walk back to the quay, Even now I still visit and look at the sunseeker yachts, tray of chips and curry sauce from the little quadrangle of shops or cockles with plenty of vinegar, Still have relatives in wallisdown and bear cross. oh the memories...............

Oh my - we live in Parkstone - my husband just had to move from premises near the Quay to somewhere smaller and half a mile inland. Before that they were in offices right on the Quay, and they could see Sunseeker from the windows.

Things are looking up now and they have just hired extra space even further from the sea, and I have been moving my knitting machine repairs into a corner of it.

I'd better not start on the price of spares for knitting machines - but if someone was to buy all the parts for a knitting machine individually it would probably amount to the price of a small car.
