Communication is key... I dont mind waiting. I mind waiting to be told there's a hold up... Something that British Rail used to be very good at; wait til the bus has left, THEN tell you the train is delayed... Oh how I don't miss mass transit...

They had a store in San Francisco in those days. It was a little under an hour's drive from San Jose. I would stop in every time I was in The City for business or taking my wife to lunch.

Guessing you're working with a middleman/jobber. You'd know if you were working directly with a full time kiltmaker. Welcome to the kilt jones.
Think of it as an impending surprise....or while away the time shopping for accessories.
As mentioned, wait time depends on so many factors from cloth availability to who's in line ahead of you. All factors a kiltmaker can give you a fairly accurate estimate on.
Enjoy the blissful agony of the kilt jones...

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
My tank took 12 weeks until completion and three weeks for delivery.
It's a good amount of time to wait, but well worth it!

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
My first kilt was a Ross Hunting tank (modern colors, though)! Hah- Good on you, and I'm certain that you'll be thrilled to death when you get it, regardless of how long the wait.
P.S. I think mine took about ten weeks to come from Scotland.

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
Thanks everyone for the info, my kilt was commissioned from the local tartan shop here in Portland, OR and is being made of Locharron wool by St. Kilda. It has been about eight weeks now, I did ok ignoring it for the last six but the jones is coming back stronger than when I ordered it! Any recommendations for a Crail or Argyll jacket? I have to wait to get the kilt before I can really choose a coat though....

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
Hello fellow Oregonian
I have been hand sewing kilts for the past 25 years and for my work there is a 2 year wait at this time. I sew at least 10,000 perm stitches plus 700 work stiches in each 8 yard gents kilt. That is if I have the tartan. I have had to wait for tartan a few times during the months when the games are going on, and for restricted tartan, you must request from the owners of the tartan the paperwork. So it does take time, and I only use one weaver for all my supplies, they are the best, and very busy. also, if you are designing a new tartan it can take up to a year or more... hope this helps.

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
If you're not a "standard" off the rack size for jackets you can have your local store order a made to measure jacket from Lochcarron...maybe through St. Kilda. But point is; if off the rack doesn't work you can get made to measure. Worth it if needed.
And hey, an old Oregonian here too.

Re: Kilt order wait time! :?
Thanks everybody for the input, unfortunately I just found out that my kilt was ordered in the wrong weight wool. I asked for a 16oz and a lightweight was ordered. Waiting now for a call back from the shop... I need a drink now!! int:
